The 2005 Teams Lightning event was held at the Legacy Centre on Sunday 11th
December. A total of nine teams competed in three divisions for prizes of
engraved electronic clocks and other individual prizes.
The tournament was run as a Round Robin of all nine teams followed by 3 rounds
using Swiss pairing. The finals were played between the top two teams in each
division. The preliminary round results and list of all team participants are in
tables at the bottom of the page.
The finals results were:
Open
Black Knights defeated GM Wannabe John & Mates (2-0).
This was after the highly rated GM Team won all preliminary rounds. Wolfgang
Leonhardt defeated Tristan Boyd and Alex Janceski defeated John Fedec.
Reserves
Rusty Anchors defeated Triple M (2.5-0.5).
Again the leading team was unable to complete the task in the finals after
working hard all day.
Under 1500
Soft Pawn drew with Peanuts (1.5-1.5)
Soft Pawn won since they were leading after the preliminary rounds. Peanuts
played in the final as there game score in the preliminary rounds was 13.5
compared to 12.5 for the Come Back Kids.
There were some novelty prizes worth noting.
1. First win of the tournament went to Mike McGregor.
2. Fastest win of the tournament went to Marc Saxon with 5 minutes left on the
clock. He defeated Norbert Muller who had 2.42 left on the clock. Both players
started with 5 minutes each so this was a remarkable performance. (Made slightly
easier by the use of Bronstein timing with one second of free non-cumulative
time available with each move.)
3. Closest win of the tournament was shared between Marc Saxon, Joe Klimczak and
Alex De Heer. This was based on the total time left on the clocks at the end of
the game. Each player won with 2 seconds combined time on the clocks, definitely
leaving the win till the last possible second.
4. Biggest upset went to Alan Wolstencroft defeating Mick Pavlovic for a rating
difference of 575.
