The 2008 Willetton Open attracted an entry of 22 players, an improvement over recent events. With eight of them being rated over 1900, an interesting struggle was anticipated. David Ellis was the DOP and everything ran smoothly. Stephanus Kurniawan survived a couple of crises in key games against Michael Horstmann and Andrew Kuklinski to win the tournament, conceding just one draw to Eugeniy Konovalov in the last round. Michael Horstmann won five games to finish clearly second and, if he had a bit of bad luck against Stephanus, this was counter balanced by a bit of good luck against Dave Dempster. Marc Vlietstra had a solid result. Eugeniy Konovalov played his first non-rapid tournament for some time. Perhaps he was a bit rusty, as he drew four games, including a somewhat lucky one against Ryan Sam in Round 1. Andrew Kuklinski was going well with 3.5 points after four rounds, but a missed win against Stephanus in Round 5 and suffered a quick loss against Marc in the last Round, that somewhat ruined his tournament. The young Junior, Lee Harris-Brown, gave a couple of much higher rated opponents a real fight and is developing a reputation as a solid player. |
