Report by Gordon Dunlop: The 2009 Teams Lightning event was held at the Legacy Centre on Sunday 13th December. A total of thirteen teams competed in four divisions. The prizes consisted of engraved electronic clocks in all divisions with Xmas chocolates and champagne (for the adult teams), with Xmas chocolates for runners up. The event was held in traditional Xmas spirit and all players had a fun time. Prizes for many of the major tournaments of the year were presented after the event together with Grand Prix awards. This was followed by a fantastic supper again prepared by parents of junior players. The tournament was run as a 9 round Swiss tournament followed by a final between the top two teams in each division. The first three rounds were played as guillotine lightning, the next three as Fisher and the last three as Bronstein. This was an interesting experience for many players who had not tried these time formats previously. Guillotine was used in the finals. The White team had two white boards and could choose their boards. The Black team could then choose their opponents. In the finals, teams had to play in rating order. The leading teams in a division could choose to have the White pieces on boards 1 and 3 needing two points to win the match. Alternatively they could take the Black pieces on those boards needing only 1.5 points to win the match. The finals results were: Open Zwichenzug defeated the Goodwill Huntingdale (2.5 - 0.5). All three teams tied for first place with 8 match points from 9. On a count back of games Goodwill Huntingdale was found to have won the preliminary tournament. It was both exciting to have three strong teams in the tournament but an obvious disappoint for Eastern Connection to miss the finals by only 1 game out of 27 played. Reserves Talkin 'bout my Generation defeated Black Knights (3.0 - 0.0). This was a turnaround from the preliminary rounds where Black Knights finished 1 match point ahead. Perhaps the finals pressure was too much, but they still had some chocolates. Restricted Guildford Grammar defeated Fianchetto (2.0 - 1.0). Santa & his Elves defeated Twelfth Knights (2.5 - 0.5) for third place. The top two teams had ended up on 5 points so this was always going to be close. Because there were 5 teams in the Restricted division a third place was awarded. Santa received a Christmas stocking. Novice HuntingDale Kids defeated Knowledge Centre (2.0-1.0). Charlton, David and Sagar played well during the day scoring 7 from 27 in the preliminary rounds. This was often done against much stronger and more experienced players. Well done for working hard all the way to the finish line. There were also some novelty prizes awarded: 1. Fastest win (or most time on clock) went to Stephanus Kurniawan with 4:30 in the guillotine section, Chirag Saroha in the Fischer section (3:05) and Yita Choong with 5:03 twice in the Bronstein section. This implies that Yita made all moves in less that 3 seconds to win the game. Both Tom Donaldson and Michael Horstmann achieved the same result but only in one game. 2. The biggest upset prize went to Sagar Badve for defeating Aston Taminsyah. Of special note were wins by Ryan Sam who defeated both Stephanus and Ganesh. This was an amazing double performance. We hope that Ryan will find the time to keep playing in adult chess tournaments next year for some more scalps. 3. Director's choice to Sean Vettoor for his very first win against long time chess opponent Aston Taminsyah. There was also a Quiz for which nine entries were received. Five questions were chess puzzles, 5 were World Champion questions and 10 were local questions. Not everybody realized that answers to many local questions were on the State Champion Honour Board on display with the trophies at the front of the Hall. The joint winners with 13/20 were Ganesh Viswanath & Chris Cuellar. They received Christmas Stockings for their efforts. Thank you to all the players for joining in the days activities and accepting the Director's decisions so graciously. Thanks also to my wife Christine, for helping on the day. 2009 Lightning Teams Adult rating is given first then the junior rating if applicable.
