2009 Willetton Open

This event is part of both the Yulgibar-Think Big Australian Chess Grand Prix and the CAWA Open Grand Prix.

The number of entries (only 15) for this event was disappointing, though on a par with many of the weekenders that we run. It further reinforces the idea that we would probably be better off by running more Allegro and Lightning events.

We did see a couple different faces Hank Segers played in his first tournament for many years (unfortunately his health problems prevented him from playing both days) and Bruce Wright, formerly from South Australia, has reached Perth after a few years spent travelling around Australia.

Dennis Holland consolidated his CAWA Grand Prix lead by winning the event, just drawing with Stephanus Kurniawan and Akef Abdat. In a tournament of fluctuating fortunes, Stephanus and Akef ended up sharing second place.

The Under 1750 rating prize came down to a last round battle between Dave Dempster and Robin Shaw where Dave finally triumphed in a King and Pawn ending. In the Under 1600 group, after the withdrawal of Hank Segers, there were only 3 players left and they all shared first place in the group! They were Grant Bultman, Bruce Wright and Alex de Heer (Alex has become a regular winner of rating prizes lately).

Bernard Laugery had a well deserved victory in the Under 1200 group, wrapping it up before the last round. A couple of interesting things happened in this group. Firstly, we had a bye for the first 3 rounds, with each of the players in this group being the lucky recipient of a free point so no advantage was gained by anyone. Also, prior to the last round, with no chance of winning their group, the two juniors in the field (Matthew Duke and George Carolin-Unkovich) were pleading for a last minute Best Junior prize. I was unswayed by their arguments but someone found a 5 cent coin on the floor, so a Best Junior prize of 5 cents was added to the prize list! Amazingly, they both seemed happy with that. George won the game, which somehow seems appropriate as he has a large collection of 5 cent pieces at home.
