The venue for this year's WA Junior Chess Championships had to be changed from previous years because of mass GATCA testing at our previous venue. Sanjay Mukhedkar approached Perth Modern School, who agreed to host the Championships, and we thank them both. Jack South and myself were the DOPs. With 41 entries, numbers were up slightly on last year, but not as high as we would like. To that end, we have decided to hold all future WA Junior Championships during the second week of the holidays for Term 1, so that parents may plan their holidays to avoid clashes with our tournament. This means that next year's Championship will be held between May 2nd and May 8th, 2011. Apart from the Under 12 Division, each tournament was played as a Round Robin. The Under 10 division started out as a Swiss but a late withdrawal led to a change in format. One slightly unusual feature was that most winners had a perfect score, the exception being the Under 12s where two players drew with each other but had a perfect score against everyone else! The Under 10 Division featured a number of players fairly new to our tournaments, and some of them performed quite well. There were also four players under the age of 8, which raises the very real prospect that we could have an Under 8 Division next year. These young players all played with great spirit and courage but struggled for wins. However, in a couple of years they probably will be dominating. David Stebbins defeated Indira Savory in Round 2 to set up his win in this division. Both players went on to win their remaining games. They also stood out by the fact that they were the only Under 10 players to use the full measure of time allocated. With a time control of 20 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, it was not unusual to see more than 30 minutes on the clock at the end of the game. Ignatius Yap, Aayush Bhardwaj, Mathew Ashworth and Amul Dharmapuri all played well in patches but would have given themselves a better chance if they could only slow down. The Under 12 Division was dominated by Varun Mukhedkar and George Carolin-Unkovich. They drew with each other and won every other game, finishing 2.5 points clear of the field. They will have to have a play off match to decide who will be the WA Under 12 Champion. Kieran Dullabh won the battle for 3rd by defeating Andrew Savory in the last round. Indira Savory only came along to watch the Under 12s but I convinced her to play and she picked up another 3 trophies, coming =4th with four other players: Andrew Savory, Lucas Findling, Robin Markwitz and Lynton Pearson. The Under 14 Division was another two person war, with William Williams defeating Aston Taminsjah in Round 2 to set up his win. Daniel D'Angelo and George Carolin-Unkovich finished =3rd but never really threatened the top two. The Under 16 and Under 18 Divisions were combined as usual, and still only resulted in 6 entries. However, the Chess was hard-fought in almost every game. Ryan Sam ended up an easy winner but was put under some pressure by a couple of his opponents. Alexander Ridley did well to finish 2nd and Lee Harris-Brown and Neville Shah also played some good Chess. The tournament was played in good spirit and with great enthusiasm. The venue was quite good, though the School would have had to move some musical instruments out of the way in order to fit us in. Report by Haydn Barber. |
