22 players fronted up for the 2010 Willetton Open, part of the 2010 Yulgilbar-Think Big Australian Chess Grand Prix and the CAWA Open Grand Prix. By WA standards, this is quite respectable, given that we also had to contend with the AFL and NRL Grand Finals. Because of the lop-sided ratings of the entrants, I decided to not have the normal Rating Groups but to use performance rating improvements instead, using whatever rating system is built into the SwissPerfect program. This provided some amazing fluctuations along the way, with David Ellis dropping 900 points in round 5 and George Carolin-Unkovich jumping nearly 650 points in the last round. At least, it provided an amusing backdrop to the actual tournament. Stephanus Kurniawan scored a convincing victory, winning every game, and finishing 1.5 points clear of the rest. David Ellis was looking good until he lost his last two games. Nedeljko Tomic had an excellent result, just sneaking past the pack for 2nd by beating David on time in the last round. There were 5 players who finished =3rd: Tim Hare, Dave Dempster, Albert Chin, David Ellis and Eddy Seah, but Eddy received the (slightly) more lucrative 3rd best Rating Perfomance prize instead. George Carolin-Unkovich made a mighty last-round leap to claim the best Rating Performance increase, as previously mentioned, Aston Taminsjah was always going well, as was Eddy Seah. Other notable rating performances were Nedeljko Tomic (+241) and Stephanus Kurniawan (+722).
