The 2012 South West Open Chess Championship was played in Bridgetown on 16th & 17th of June.

Congratulations to Julian Painter - winner of the tournament and also living in Bunbury is the
Country Champion. The prize list is as follows: Open: 1st Julian Painter, =2nd Natalie and Robert Maris. U/1700: 1st Malcolm Smith, 2nd Adam Kelly, =3rd Jacques Meyer & George Carolin-Unkovich. U/1000: 1st Steven Wood, 2nd Alan Kelly, =3rd Cathy Farrelly, Bert Reynolds & David Johnston. The encouragement Prize went to local Junior Morio Freeman. Representatives from Albany,Bunbury,Busselton,Bridgetown and Perth made up the 29 starters of the tournament.Unfortuneatley three players dropped out during the tournament leaving us with 26 players. Many thanks to Barbara Johnson and Jennifer Duncan for their efforts in ensuring that the tournament had a suitable venue and the participants were able to get some refreshments at their leisure. Thanks also go to Barbara, Jennifer and Julian in Bunbury for advertising the tournament in the local newspapers. I am sure the players enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and am certain they will return next year provided the Bridgetown/Greenbushes Tourism Association are happy to have the Chess Association of W.A. hold the South West Open in Bridgetown again.
