2013 WA Closed Chess Championship


Tristan Boyd wins his 4th WA Championship!

This year’s WA Closed Chess Championship was held at the Huntingdale Chess Club. This was done purely as a cost-cutting exercise, after the problems last year. Apart from the distance some people had to travel, I thought that it would prove to be a reasonable venue. However, I had not counted on the neighbours racing their toy motorbikes up and down the street. Whilst this could have happened anywhere, it was still annoying.

Tristan Boyd and Yita Choong were the hot favourites, and they proved their dominance over the rest of the field. Only Marc Vlietstra was able to maintain a realistic challenge, until he faded a little towards the end.

The draw was made completely at random but, as luck would have it, Tristan and Yita met at the end of the tournament. Tristan had to win with Black, which he was able to achieve, but not without a bit of luck. Both played well throughout but, without much evidence to go on (I was usually desparately trying to salvage something from yet another wrecked position), I thought that Yita was playing a little better.

Marc Vlietstra is getting closer, Robert Maris had a pretty good result, and George Carolin-Unkovich should benefit a lot from the experience. Tim Hare has not played much in the last couple of years, and it showed.
