The 2013 Western Australian Lightning Championship was held on Sunday 13th October at the Moresby Street Centre, Kensington. There were 18 participants who competed over 11 rounds for the Championship title. The winner was Yita Choong with an almost perfect score of 10.5. A tie occurred for second place occurred between Tom Donaldson and Bozidar Mandic. It was good to have these two players participate as they have not played for some time in a CAWA event. It was very impressive to achieve such an excellent result. The under 1800 group was won by George Carolyn-Unkovich with Ross List in second place. The under 1600 group was won by Sri Dharmapuri with Nedelko Tomic and Lennard Mechlowski tying for second place. The event was played without incident and players had a good day of chess on all boards. The competition was strong and a number of reasonably good players found themselves fighting hard on bottom boards during the day (including myself). Report by Gordon Dunlop DOP |
