The 2014 South West Open Chess Championship was played in Bridgetown on the 14th & 15th of June.
There were 23 entries this year. Participants enjoyed fine weather which was great for walking around the town during the day. Pip from the bakery supplied freshly baked scones each day with a choice of jams together with cream. Dariel from the visitor centre provided coffee and tea for both days with some help from local volunteers. This was all very much appreciated by the participants. Many players were local to Bridgetown and four players came all the way from Albany. There were also two players participating from Liverpool UK, who timed their visit to Australia to play in this event while touring WA. They have invited players to visit the Atticus Chess Club in Liverpool should they be in the area. They meet monday nights. It just so happens I will be in Liverpool on a monday night next month so will take up the offer. The joint WA country champions this year were Gyula Plaganyi and Gary Donaldson with a final score of 4.0. They were just able to beat last years joint country champions Steven Wood and junior Jayden Williams. The prize list: Open 1st: Marc Vliestra with a picket fence, 2nd: Gavin Adam, =3rd: Gyula Plaganyi & David Ellis U/1750 =1st: Gary Donaldson & Tom Webb, 3rd: Mike Nairn U/1300 1st: Sri Dharmapuri, 2nd: Robert Freeman, =3rd Robert Cunningham & Harrison Taylor Encouragement Awards to 2 juniors Morio Freeman and Kundan Dharmapuri The Lightning Tournament held on Sunday evening with 14 players was also won by Marc Vlietstra but this time without a picket fence, dropping a half point to Steve Wood.
