The 2016 WA Junior Allegro Championships attracted 33 participants. There was a good mix of experienced players and new entrants to the junior chess scene, some of whom performed quite strongly. Patrick Gong was the outright winner with 8.5/9. After a somewhat shaky start, being offered a draw in a losing position against a low-on-time Kevin Shah Mansouri in Round 2, he recovered quickly and scored a crucial win against early tournament leader George Carolin-Unkovich in Round 5. George kept pace with Patrick for the remaining 4 rounds, but eventually had to settle for 2nd place with 8/9. Meanwhile, there was a fierce battle for 3rd place and the age group prizes. Ben Hurst looked poised to take outright 3rd, when he unexpectedly popped his queen in a dominating position against Kevin in the last round. This opened the door for a 5(!)-way tie for 3rd on 6/9 between Ben, Kevin, Pranav Senthil Kumar, Sri Krishna Dharmapuri and Alex Mhawira. Meanwhile, a point back, there was a 3-way tie for the under 10 prize when frontrunners Alex Pimenov and Kundan Dharmapuri both lost their last game, allowing Raghav Senthil Kumar to catch them. It was also very encouraging to see several girls participating. Of the girls, Safiyya Aljunied had clearly the most tournament experience, and she came close to beating George and drawing with Patrick on her way to defending her title from last year. The best of the newcomers was 10 year old Wenhan Qiu, who scored a respectable 4/9 and had no qualms sacrificing her queen for a back rank mate in one of her games. Apart from a late start due to some no-shows and a couple of mid-tournament withdrawals, the tournament ran fairly smoothly. As DOPs, wed like to thank all of the players for their cooperation and for graciously accepting our rulings on minor disputes, and we hope that everyone enjoyed playing in the event.
