2016 State Allegro Championship


The 2016 WA Allegro Championship was held at North Woodvale Primary School on Sunday 27th November. The tournament was a success by local standards, attracting 36 players. Pleasingly the field was quite strong compared to recent events held in Perth, and it also included a relatively high number of female and junior players.

The tournament was won by 17-year-old Patrick Gong (2180). While all of Patrick's rivals dropped points to each other, Patrick was scarcely troubled throughout, conceding only 1 draw to FM Tristan Boyd (2401) who was 2nd with 7/9.

Particular thanks go to Gordon Dunlop, Lorenzo Escalante, and my wife Kathryn for their help throughout the day, and to Rob and Natalie Maris for opening the venue. As is typical in Allegro, there were a few incidents where difficult rulings were required, and I thank all players for accepting my decisions graciously.

Total Chess, a junior chess initiative run by Dennis Holland, has sponsored the WA Allegro Championship for the past 2 years. A prize of $60 was offered by Total Chess to the highest scoring player who also participates in Total Chess events. This prize was won by 9-year-old Alex Pimenov, a relative newcomer to the WA chess scene, whose 3.5/9 included wins against Colin Koehler (1743) and Brian Gale (1589).
