The 2020 Junior Future Star Chess Tournament was held in UWA Ezone on the 15th of November. A whopping 85 promising young chess players turned up in what was one of the biggest WA junior events in recent years. Given the impact of COVID-19, it was extremely pleasing to see many fresh new faces coming and attempting in their ever tournament.

As our very first tournament, things didn't quite go according to planned (it never does!). An unexpected road closure struck, causing a few children to arrive late. As a direct result, the tournament started 30 minutes behind our initial schedule. However, once we got the tournament rolling it was a great success. The day saw many nail-biting games with close competition across all three divisions (Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner). Given the recent popularity surrounding the Netflix series 'Queen's Gambit', it is an encouraging sign to see quite a few girls participating, as well as two girls managing to topple their respective divisions.

Congratulations to all the prize winners (and for everyone involved)!
