The 2020 CAWA Gufeld Cup was held at North Woodvale Primary School on Sunday 27th & Monday 28th of December. The unusually small field for the 2020 Gufeld Cup (held over from Easter to end of December) was compensated by the very strong field with four +2000 players. FM Patrick Gong was the top rated but a half point bye in Rd 3 may have prevented his taking off first prize by himself although he was assured of stiff opposition from rising juniors Rebo Fu and Jamie Laubbacher and Adam Kelly, back on holiday from his uni studies in the east. Jamie's game with Rebo was its usual tense affair with Jamie gaining a winning attack on Rebo's king. By the final round Patrick had beaten his two junior rivals but was forced to struggle to a draw with Adam, leaving him sharing the top spot with Jamie (5/6). Ned Tomic and David Berry (3/6) shared the rating prizes for Under 1800 players. The tournament also provided the venue for a One Day Rapidplay Under 1400 event which may have affected the small entry for the Gufeld and been a distraction for some players but was definitely a very worthwhile experiment with 30 or so almost exclusively juniors players competing.
