The 2021 Gufeld Cup, held over the long Easter weekend at Southern Subburbs Chess Club, attracted 24 entrants. Jamie Laubaccher continued his series of tournament victories, scoring 5.5/6. Second was a newcomer to WA, Joerg Raichle (4.5/6) who has moved to Perth from Sydney and will be a welcome addition to WA's leading player group. A host of players with 4.0 pts came third - Tim Hare, Robert Stolz, Edaud Caledo and Walter Stassen. The top Under 1850 prize winners on 3.5 were Marcus Simonds and 11 year old Noah Taylor who had a splendid debut in senior chess. Equal third on 3.0 were Tjermin Gunawan, Herbert Cadag, Derek Roebuck, Ned Tomic, David Barry and Dylan Gough. As Noah Taylor was ineligible to receive a second prize, prizes in the Under 1600 group went to Marco Gunawan and Huang Hui (both on 2.5) and Yonal De Vas, Grant Bultman and Naveen Umasankar (all 1.5). In all 19 of the 24 players received prizes and despite losing only one game and being the only player to halt Jamie's winning run, I was one of the few to miss out.
