The 2021 WA Junior Rapidplay Chess Championships was held as a two-day 9 round Swiss on Thursday, 30th September and Friday, 1st October at Leeming Primary School with 51 players participating. Entrants were divided into an Under 18 and Under 12 tournaments with a total of five age subdivisions. The Under 18s tournament consisted of 15 players including five girls. Yihe Fu (Rebo) dominated with a perfect score of 9 from 9. The girl's title was a much closer with Paula Gruber, Anoushka Gupta, Jiani Li and Celine Ong all in with a chance. In the end Anoushka won by half a point with a very strong finish including beating Kundan Dharmapuri in the last round. Despite this loss Kundan came first in the Under 15s edging out Oscar Gao on the Buchholz score. Oscar had to settle for 2nd in the Under 18s. There was a very encouraging performance by relative newcomer, Ramnat Naveen Umasankar who came third in the Under 18s. Shannon Koh was third in the Under 15s. The Under 12s tournament consisted of 36 players playing in one group with the results deciding the placings for three age sub divisions. In the under 12 division the winner was Issa Majidi with 8 from 9. A very solid performance with no losses. Issa was closely followed by Eu Jin Khaw who was also undefeated but had four draws. Anthony Nguyen was third. Eric Deng won the Under 10s. His draw in the last round against Eu Jin Khaw secured the title. Second was Jeremiah Ng who had strong finish with wins in the last four rounds. Third was Eu Ming Khaw. Angus Chen, one of our most promising Juniors won the Under 8s. This was a very good performance including a win against Eric Deng and a draw with Anthony Nguyen. Second was Senudi De Vas and third Kaviru Perera. There was a playoff for the Under 12s Girls title, between Mia Cohen and Senudi De Vas. In the first game, Senudi secured an early material advantage with the French defence and won. In the second game Mia played a very good positional game against Senudi's Queen's Gambit and won. This meant the title was to be decided by an Armageddon Blitz game. Senudi won with an early attack against Mia's king. Special thanks to: Faith Tee, JC Keng and Devi who ably assisted me in the smooth running of the tournament.
