On Sunday, 11th April a Blitz tournament was held at the University of Western Australia in the E-Zone building. The same room that has been used for the recent Future Stars tournament. This is an excellent venue with good lighting, projectors and air-conditioning. The intention was to divide up the entrants into three Divisions: Open, Under 1550 and Under 1200. However, there were a limited number of Under 1550 entrants so this group was amalgamated into the Open Division. A total of 34 players competed in the two Divisions. Open Division The eleven round Open Division was a strong group with five players rated over 2000. This division was dominated by an undefeated FM Tristan Boyd with a score of 10/11. Second was Jamie Laubbacher with 9/11 and third was Tim Hare with 8.5/11. Open Prize Winners 1st: Tristan Boyd 10/11, 2nd: Jamie Laubbacher 9/11, 3rd: Tim Hare 8.5/11, =4th: Yihe Fu (Rebo) & Neville Shah 8/11. Under 1550 Division The Under 1550 entrants had a tough time often being pitted against much higher rated opponents. Hebert Cadag did the best in this group, closely followed by Richard Chen and then there were four players who finished equal third. Under 1550 Prize Winners 1st: Herbert Cadag 6/11, 2nd: Richard Chen 5.5/11, =3rd: Karl Cabatit, Dylan Gough, Sanjay Mukhedkar & Richard Shaw 5/11. Under 1200 Division The Under 1200 consisted of 15 players of which five were Juniors, (Felix, Ishaan, Jaswanth Ram, Jayden and Timofei). All the juniors acquitted themselves well and two Ishaan and Jaswanth Ram were amongst the prize winners. This Division developed into a two-horse race between Ishaan Barbare and James Ryan. Both players dropped one point and tied for first place. They were closely followed by Hui Huang and then Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman. Under 1200 Prize Winners 1st: Ishaan Barbare & James Ryan 10/11, 3rd: Hui Huang 9/11, 4th: Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman 7/11. Special thanks to Erick Ng, the President of the UWA chess club who organised the venue and assisted in running the tournament. Dylan Gough provided considerable assistance in setting up the Vega files for the two divisions. Thanks to the several university students that helped with setting up the chess sets.
