On Sunday, 12th December a Blitz tournament was held at the University of Western Australia in the E-Zone building. There were two separate tournaments an Open (with four rating sections) and an Under 800. The former had 33 players and the latter 21 players.
Open Tournament
The eleven round Open Division consisted of four ratings groups. The Open was won convincingly by Yihe Fu (Rebo), (14 years old) with a perfect score of 11/11. Rebo, thus continued his excellent results in the 2021 CAWA Grand Prix Quick events. The Under 1850 and Under 1550 were dominated by UWA students. Kevin Shah Mansouri (the UWA Chess President) won the Under 1850 with 8.5/11 (an excellent score). Joshua Fry (UWA) won the Under 1550 with 7/11. Joshua was closely followed by Erick Ng (the ex-UWA Chess President) with 6.5/11.
The younger players dominated the Under 1200. The winner was Naveen Ramnat Umasankar with 6/11. An excellent result considering the ratings of his opponents. Pranav Borude came second with the same score as Naveen but his Buchholz score was lower.
Cash prizes were given to the top three players in each division and the fourth player got an Xmas chocolate gift.

Under 800 Division
This division was specifically designed for our younger players with lower ratings who wanted to experience a Blitz tournament. Most of the players were Primary school students with some Secondary school students. The tournament evolved into a neck and neck race between Bruce Yu and Lim Jin Yu. Bruce faltered towards the end and Jin was the winner with 9.5/11. There were good performances by newcomers Lawson Straw and Nathan Sason.
Cash prizes were given to the top eight players and Xmas chocolate gifts to all contestants.
