The 2022 South West Open was played over the weekend of 30/31 July in Margaret River at the Margaret River Community Centre. The venue proved to be a good choice - part of the Old Hospital Heritage Precinct - with a well sized playing room and many other rooms and rest/analysis areas. There were 18 players and the games were hotly contested up and down the ratings. There was an unusually high number of draws attesting to the closeness of the play - a total of 19, well supported by Stewart Hunt who scored four of them! There were also many games that went against the expected results based on ratings. Congratulations to Keegan O'Mahoney who took out first prize and to Boyd McCamon and Dylan Iwach who share the WA Country Champion title. Special mention also to Michael Molenar who went in with an ACF rating of 1258 and returned a performance rating of 1801 - a stupendous achievement. However, the highlight of the weekend was a terrific turnout at the Settler's Tavern on Saturday evening where all players met up for some food and drinks and some retellings of their games, complete with Silicon Tal analysis!
