On Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, 9th and 10th April, the Gufeld Cup tournament was held at the North Woodvale Primary School. 28 players competed for the cup which was donated by Grandmaster Edward Gufeld in 1996 during a visit to Perth. This was a six round ACF rated tournament in which our younger players dominated the event. Going into the last round it was still open with Jamie Laubbacher on 4.5 points, followed by Ian McAteer on 4 points, and five players on 3.5 points, David Barry, Eamon Harris, Carter Kerr, Noah Taylor and Naveen Ramnat Umasankar. Jamie secured the title by beating Ian, Eamon came second by beating David, Naveen and Noah drew and Carter lost to Dylan Gough. Ian, Noah and Ramnat can take some consolation as they were joint winners of the Under 1800 division along with Dylan. The two strongest players in the Under 1600 were Paula Gruber and Carter Kerr. Paula was also the strongest female player, narrowly ahead of Kobe Wu (=3rd in the Under 1600) and Yasmina Cavosie-Pletsch. Newcomer Jordan Smith also performed well in this division and came =3rd. The Under 1000 was closely contested amongst eight players. Going into the last round there were three players on 2 points, Hardy Dai, Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman and Lucas Wang (visitor from Queensland), plus one player on 1.5, Akash Ashok. In the last round Dai lost to Jordan Smith, Jaswanth lost to Robert Stortz, Lucas drew with Hui Hang (one of the several upsets involving junior versus senior players) and Ashok beat his brother Anish. This left Ashok and Lucas as joint winners of the Under 1000 Division. As mentioned, this was definitely a tournament where our Juniors dominated the event. There were several upsets along the way including Carter beating Dominador Andador, Kobe beating Robert and myself losing to Yasmina. A sign of how well Junior chess is developing in Perth.
