The 2024 Gufeld Cup (6 Round Swiss - 60min + 10s per move) was played on the 31st March & 1st April at Southern Suburbs Chess Club.

The Easter weekend (31 Mar & 01 Apr) saw the traditional Gufeld Cup played at Leeming PS. The terrific weather made for a very pleasant tournament enjoyed by a competitive 22 strong field with many long, hard fought, and complicated games. The winner was WFM Kathryn Hardegen, who swept to a perfect 5.0/5 before agreeing a quick draw in round 6 to assure her victory. Second was Eric Deng with a very good above-rating performance for 5.0/6, and third was Walter Stassen on 4.5/6. In the U1750 Jaswanth Sethuraman also performed well above his rating to take out 1st prize on 4.0/6. Akash Ashok took out the U1200 prize on 3.0/6. In the upsets table, a clearly underrated Leo Gong won two games when outrated by more than 500 points, and a more fairly rated Jaswanth Sethuraman upset Derek Elkington to score a 300 point upset with a lovely finish to checkmate.
