2008 Teams Lightning Championship
Report by Gordon Dunlop: The 2008 Teams Lightning event was held at the Legacy Centre on Sunday 14th December. A total of fifteen teams competed in five divisions. The prizes consisted of engraved electronic clocks, in the top three divisions, with Xmas stockings for the other divisions and all runners up. The event was held in traditional Xmas spirit and all players had a fun time. Prizes for many of the major tournaments of the year were presented after the event together with Grand Prix awards. This was followed by a fantastic supper prepared by parents of junior players. The tournament was run as a 9 round Swiss tournament followed by a final between the top two teams in each division. The first three rounds were played as guillotine lightning, the next three as Fisher and the last three as Bronstein. This was an interesting experience for many players who had not tried these time formats previously. Guillotine was used in the finals. The White team had two white boards and could choose their boards. The Black team could then choose their opponents. In the finals, players had to play in rating order. The leading teams in a division could choose to have the White pieces on boards 1 and 3 needing two points to win the match, or take the Black pieces on those boards needing only 1.5 points to win the match. The finals results were: Open Goodwill Huntingdale defeated the Hardegen team (1.5-1.5). Goodwill Huntingdale won all their preliminary rounds but found themselves 0.5-1.5 after the first two games had finished and Tristan was under pressure to obtain a win against Andrew to win the match. Andrew had to settle for the Xmas stocking but well done for an exciting and close finish in the final. Reserves Bahama Boys defeated the McMahon team (2.0-1.0). These two teams scores 6 match points and 18 game points in the preliminary rounds. In round seven the Bahama Boys won their match against the McMahon team so had the choice of colours for the final. Well done for their consistency during the day. Restricted Veronamy defeated Applecross (2.0-1.0). Again a close tussle between all three teams in this division resulted in tie break rules being applied. Together with the Sino.Ajay/William teams all teams were on 5 match points. Veronamy had 18 game points, Applecross 16.5 and Sino 12 game points. Well done Veronamy for winning and for the very creative name. Novice A Floppy Carrots defeated Sri/Afdal/Van (2.0-1.0). Again both teams were on 4 match points but the Floppy Carrots had 13 game points compared 10. The young Carrots prevailed against the older team from the Philippines. Congratulations to the Carrots each received Xmas stockings. Novice B Young Whipper Snippers defeated Jessica Ciny/David (3.0-0.0). In this special division for novices the Young Whipper Snippers prevailed in a decisive win. Congratulations and expect to play in a higher division next year. There were some novelty prizes worth noting. 1) Biggest upset prizes went to the unrated Ajay Sood for defeating Gordon Dunlop.
