This tournament was held over the Foundation Day weekend on the 1st & 2nd of June at Legacy House in South Perth. The DOP was Haydn Barber. The number of participants, only 16, was again disappointing but the event was still quite strong with half of the participants being rated over 1800. Tournament after tournament, we see a solid core of about a dozen regular players competing but not much depth. At least, this time, we had a visitor from Sydney in Brian Jones who provided some variety. Brian says that Perth has been a lucky venue for him, and it proved so once again as he recovered from a loss to Michael Horstmann in Round 3 to win the tournament. Michael looked the goods with 4 wins in the first 4 rounds but then he hit the wall. SwissPerfect provided some entertainment by producing a bizarre draw for Round 5. I had to manually alter 6 of the 8 pairings, the first time that I personally have had to take such action. The prizemonies for 2nd, 3rd, U2000 and Top Junior were combined and split amongst all of the 5 players who tied for second. (Report by Haydn Barber) |
