The Gufeld Cup (6 rounds) was played over the weekend of the 30th of April & 1st of May at the Moresby Street Centre in Kensington. This year, because Easter and Anzac Day ran into each other, the Gufeld Cup was run a week after Easter. This may have been a factor in the smallish turnout, though I doubt it. However, the field was tough enough, with 8 of the 16 players being rated over 1800. The result was a hard fought and interesting competition. Yita Choong and Tim Hare finished equal winners. Yita looked to have secured a vital advantage, winning their individual clash in round four, but failed to consolidate, losing to Dave Dempster in the next round. Tim looked to be struggling to beat Akef Saleh in the last round, but he did enough to ensure a share of first place. David Ellis continued his consistent run of results, losing just to Tim and Yita. He also missed a chance to make life a bit difficult for Yita in their round three game. Thomas Pinnock is one of our better juniors and, in his first open tournament, produced an excellent result with a rating performance of 1845. Aston Taminsjah did not star, as usual, but he still had another creditable result. Report by Haydn Barber. |
