The Kingsley Open is the first of our Grand Prix weekenders every year, and was again held at the Moresby Street Hall on the 23rd & 24th of February. We had a good turnout, in terms of numbers, and also in terms of strength. Of the 21 players, 9 were rated 1900 or over. The mix of players was also good, with three recent-ish arrivals playing: Pedro Paiva, Daniel Larsson and Ian Sutton, and also six Juniors. I hope this is a good omen for 2013 in general, and for the WA Open, in particular. This event is in two weeks time and could be a very interesting tournament. If there is a good entry, the prizes should also be quite good. One slightly sad feature was that the Kingsley Open was Dave Dempsters last tournament in WA. He is retiring back to the UK. We wish him all the best and thank him for his contributions to Chess in WA. In keeping with expectations, the tournament was hard fought, with a number of unexpected results. With one round to go, there were 4 players tied for first place. Of these, only Tristan Boyd was able to win his last round and he picked up a good win, finishing on 5 points. The other last round results ended up producing a six way tie for second, with Marc Vlietstra, Yita Choong, Pedro Paiva, Ian Sutton, Daniel Larsson and Thomas Pinnock all finishing on 4 points. The lucky one of this group was Thomas, who benefited by taking out the U2000 prize, instead of the sub-divided 2nd place. Steven Hintz showed the value of perseverence. After losing his first three games, he fought back to finish on 3 out of 6, and won the U1800 prize. The U1400 and Junior prizes were combined because of a tie between three of our promising younger players: George Carolin-Unkovich, Patrick Gong and Ignatius Yap. George may have been slightly disappointed, but I think the other two were pretty happy. Report by: Haydn Barber, DOP |
