The 2022 WA Junior State Chess Championships was held over four days from Monday, 4th July to Thursday, 7th July at the Sadler Centre, Corpus Christi College. There was a total of 143 entrants for the eight different tournaments.
The venue was an excellent one with the different tournaments held in different rooms with a glass partition separating spectators from the players. The large number of Blitz players needed two rooms to accommodate all the players.

Rising Stars Under 10s
There were 10 entrants to this new addition to the State Junior Championships. All entrants had to have an ACF rating of less than 500. The tournament was convincingly won by Lennon Kerr with a perfect score of 9 from 9. Second with 7 from 9 was Dhruv Sanjay and third with the same score but a lower Buchholz was Nathan To.

Rising Stars Under 12s
9 players took part in this new styled tournament. As for the Rising stars Under 10s only players with an ACF rating of less than 500 could compete in this event. It was closely contested with only a half point separating the top four players. The winner was Aditi Patil with 6.5, Second was Benjamin Pyvis with 6 and third was Griffin Walker with 5.5.

The under 8s tournament had 14 entrants. It developed into a two-horse race between and Senudi De Vas and Kaviru Perera. Senudi lost to Thomas Yuen and Kaviru lost to Senudi. Both Kaviru and Senudi ended up with 8 from 9. Kaviru won the playoff with Senudi. Three players achieved 6 from 9, Felix Watkins, Aaron Tun and Jeremy Li. Felix had the better Buchholz score and gained third place. Aaron and Jeremy had to settle for merit awards along with Thomas Yuen who got 5 from 9. Senudi won the Best Girl trophy. Special mention to Tyson Carr just turned 5 who beat two much older opponents.

Under 10
There were 19 entrants for the under 10s tournament. This tournament developed into a contest between Eric Deng and Senudi De Vas. They drew their individual games and beat all their other opponents, thus ending up both with 8.5 from 9. The playoff was somewhat tense but Eric prevailed and Senudi had to settle for second place and the Best Girl award. Avan Chung was third with 7 from 9 and Charis Ong was the Second Best girl with 6 from 9. Samantha Walker was the third Best Girl. Ezra Levine, Yonatan Kitay, Leo Gong, Jineth Gunawardena and Ishaan Sudheesh all received Merit awards.

The under 12s tournament had 29 entrants; a very strong group with 6 players rated over 1200. Two players, Issa Majidi and Eric Deng forged ahead of the rest both finishing with 8 from 9. In the playoff Eric beat Issa. Third was Liam Raptis with 6.5. Nithuli Liyange won the Best Girl Award, Kobe Wu was second best Girl and Charis Ong the third best Girl. With such a strong field it was appropriate to recognise the following with a Merit Award: Eamon Harris, Anthony Nguyen, Timothy Kaempf, Dominic Davoll, Ezra Levine, Yonal De Vas, Sebastian Walker and Leo Gong.

This tournament had 14 contestants. After 5 rounds there were two leaders Aarnav Gupta and Paula Gruber, closely followed by Aaron Levine and Barath Harirajesh on 3.5. In the last two rounds Aarnav beat Aaron and Lucas Lee, whereas Paula beat Manunithish Dhilipkumar but lost to Thomas He. This meant Aarnav won the Under 14s title and Paula had to settle for third place and the Best Girl award. Barath had a strong finish winning his last two games and came second. Aaron was fourth and Thomas Harirajesh on 4 points was fifth. Newcomer Yasmina Cavosie-Pletsch (Second Girl) played well and was close to finishing in the top group.

Open Division - under 16s and under 18s
The Open division (a combined Under 16 and under 18 group) consisted of 18 players. Yihe Fu (Rebo) dominated this event and was heading for a perfect score until he drew in the last round with Shannon Koh. Rui Gen Teh was the Under 16 winner and Shannon came second in the under 18. Third in the Under 18 was Jayden Singh. The Best Girl was Celine Ong and Jiani Li won the Under 16 Girl title. Angus was second in the Under 16 and Ning Xiao Zhou was third.

The Blitz Championships had 52 players ranging in age from 18 to 6. The winner was Yihe Fu (Rebo) with 10.5 from 11. Second with 9.5 points was the Under 16 winner Rui Gen Teh. Celine Ong was the Best Girl with 7.5. Other title winners were: Oscar Gao (Under 14), Paula Gruber (Best Girl Under 14), Yonal De Vas (Under 12), Kobe Wu (Best Girl Under 12), Eric Deng (Under 10), Senudi De Vas (Best Girl Under 10) and Felix Watkins (under 8).
