The 2023 WA Junior Rapidplay Chess Championships was held as a one day, 9 round Swiss on Sunday, 7th May at the Sadler Centre, Corpus Christi College with 52 players participating. Entrants were divided into two tournaments an Under 18 and Under 12 with a total of five age subdivisions. The Under 18s tournament consisted of 23 players. Shannon Koh won the Under 18s division with no losses and two draws. Chintushig Chinbat came second in the same division losing to Shannon and drawing with Dylan Gould. Ilya Eimery came first in the Under 15 division a very good result which included a draw with Shannon Koh. Second in the under 15 division was Yonal De Vas. Kobe Wu played well in this strong tournament to win the Girls Rapidplay title. The Under 12s tournament consisted of 29 players with three divisions. In the under 12 division it was a neck and neck race between Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman and Senudi De Vas. Ram was leading after 5 rounds but in the sixth round lost to Senudi. Senudi drew with Ayun Batahena and Nithuli Liyange. This meant that Ram and Senudi finished with the same score. Senudi won the title of the Under 12 Champion (and the Under 12 Girls title) with a superior Buchholz score. Ram had to settle for second place despite a very strong performance. Ayun Batahena played well to win the Under 10s title. Akash Ashok came second in the Under 10s and might have done better if he had not got into time trouble in several games. The Under 8s was won by Jet Mahandis and second was Leo Carvin. A very good performance by two of our younger players in a strong field. Special thanks to Deputy Arbiters Dylan Gough and Carvin Kumar, Faith Tee (Junior Vice-President), Mrs De Vas and Dr Niranjini Subramaniam for their assistance in making the tournament a success. Thanks to the De Vas family who helped me pack up the equipment at the end of the tournament.
