The 2024 WA Junior State Chess Championships was held over four days from Monday, 8th July to Thursday, 11th July at the Gibney Hall, Trinity College. There was a total of 212 entrants for the six different tournaments.
The venue was a good one with a very spacious hall and stage with which to spread out the various tournaments.

The under 8s tournament had a record high of 20 entrants. This nine round contest for the championship developed into a two-horse race between Daniel Luong and Zeno Brackenridge. Going into the last round Daniel was on 7.5 points and Zeno on 7. Daniel beat Khatangua Nyamdari and Zeno lost Gleb Orlov which meant Daniel secured the championship and Zeno had to settle for second place. Not far behind on 6.5 points was Jayden Tseng who drew with Daniel in an earlier round. Merit Trophies were awarded to Quang Minh Le, Gleb Orlov, Maksim Dryakhlov, Khatangua Nyamdari, Dhanwant Karthick Kumar, Uranbaigali Uuganbaatar, Christian Shea, and Damsara Perera.
This tournament was well represented by girls with a total of five competing. Two girls Khatangua Nyamdari and Uranbaigali Uuganbaatar played well enough to gain Merit Trophies. Khatangua won the best Girls title with a superior Buchholz score to Uranbaigali.

1st place with 8.5 points: Daniel Luong, 2nd place with 7 points: Zeno Brackenridge, 3rd place with 6.5 points: Jayden Tseng.
Best Girl with 5 points: Khatangua Nyamdari.

There were 40 entrants for this nine round under 10s tournament. This was a closely fought contest amongst several of the higher rated players. Thomas Yuen got off to a flying start and was the sole leader after 5 rounds with 5 points. However, Thomas had subsequent losses to Senudi De Vas and Gia Bao Ho. The leadership then became a contest between Gia Bao Ho and Quang Minh Le. When Bao beat Quang Minh in the eighth round it looked like he would secure the championship. However, Bao lost to Jet Mahanidis in the last round which meant that three players Bao, Jet and Quang Minh ended up as the Joint leaders with 7 points each. A playoff ensued which Quang Minh Le won convincingly with two wins. Jet and Bao drew their game so an Armageddon game was staged which Jet won. This meant Jet came second and Bao was third. Merit trophies were awarded to Ethan Page, Senudi De Vas, Thomas Yuen, Kaviru Perera, Ford Cu, Ishaan Dhanak, Daniel Luong, Manning Downes and Shijirgun, Nyamdari.
Senudi De vas won the Girls title with 6.5 points.

This tournament had 41 entrants. After 6 rounds it had developed into a closely fought contest between four principal contenders, Yuqi (Ricky) Huang (5), Jet Mahanidis (5), Senudi De Vas (5) and Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman (4.5). The seventh round saw Ricky beat Senudi, Jet beat Jason Li and Ram beat Isaac Li. In the eighth round Ricky beat Jet, Ram beat Gia Bao Ho and Senudi drew with Ezra Levine. So going into the last round it was between Ricky (6.5 points) and Ram (6 points) who were playing each other to decide the Championship. This key game ended up in a draw which meant that Ricky secured the championship. Like the Under 8s this tournament was well represented by girls with a total of eight competing Senudi (Girls Champion) finished two points clear of her nearest rivals Charis Ong and Emma Chong.

The Open division was a combined group of the under 14s, Under 16s and under 18s a total of 28 players. In the previous year the Under 14s were run as a separate group. However, this year there was a paucity of entries for the Under 18s/Under 16s so it was decided to combine all three groups. It made further sense as most of the stronger rated players were under 14.
This tournament was dominated by Ashvin Balavignan with 8.5 points from 9 rounds. Ashvin looked like he was heading for a perfect score but drew his last game with Issa Majidi. Anthony Nguyen also had a very good tournament and won the Uder 16s title. The Under 14s was decided by a playoff between Yonal De Vas and Issa Majidi which Issa won.
It was good to see three of our strongest girls Paula Gruber, Nithuli Liyanage, and Kobe Wu competing in this event. Going into the last round Paula and Nithuli were leading on playing 4.5 points and Kobe had 4 points. In the last round Paula lost to Chitushig Chinbat and Nithuli lost to Barath Hirarjesh. However, Kobe beat Eric Deng. This meant that Kobe became the State Girls Champion and Paula and Nithuli went into the playoff for the Under 16 Girls title. The playoff was extremely close eventually being decided by an Armageddon game which Paula won. This meant that Paula claimed the Under 16 Girls title and Nithuli the Under 14s Girls title.

Like last year FM Yihe Fu (Rebo) designed and ran the year's Problem-Solving competition. This event has proved to quite popular with 30 entrants. Ashvin Balavignan won the Open section with 103 points out of a possible 125 and Leo Gong won the Under 12s section with 100 out of 125, both excellent scores.

43 players competed in the Blitz Championships. The 11 round State Championship was won by Ashvin Balavignan with 9.5. Ashvin had only one loss to Barath Harirajesh. Barath was second in this tournament with 8.5 points. Third also with 8.5 points was Eric Deng, (Under 14 champion). Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman won the Under 12 title with 7 points and Senudi De Vas was the Under 10 Champion and Girls champion with 6.5 points. Daniel Luong repeated his success winning the Under 8s Title with 6 points.
