The 2025 WA Junior Championship was held at Gibney Hall, Trinity College, 2 Trinity Ave, East Perth WA 6004, from Monday, July 7th, to Thursday, July 10th. We welcomed 110 players with a total of 152 entries, including 16 girls, across various sections - the main Open games, Blitz, and problem-solving competitions.

Note
In the Under 10 Best Girl category, a playoff between Audrey Tan and Uranbaigali Uuganbaatar was required under CAWA's tiebreak and playoff procedures (documented in 2022). However, due to an oversight by the arbiter team - and incorrect handling of a similar situation in 2024 - a precedent was set where the playoff was not conducted. By the time the error was identified, it was no longer practical to correct. In light of this, CAWA decided to award both girls the joint First Girl trophy in the U10 section and share the Best Girl title.

No Best Girl titles were awarded in the Under 14, Under 16, or Under 18 sections, as none of the girls in these categories met the minimum requirement - winning at least half of the available points (4.5 out of 9) - to qualify for a title or individual prize. Consequently, no 2025 State Girl Champion title was awarded.
Normally, the Under 18 Girl Champion is also recognised as the State Girl Champion and recorded on the perpetual honours list alongside the annual Women's Champion. However, since no girl in the U18 section achieved the required result this year, the State Girl Champion title remains vacant for 2025.

Notes
1. In the Under 10 Blitz Open section (where a playoff should have been held between Gia Bao Ho and Damsara Perera) and in the Under 8 Blitz Open section (where a playoff should have been held between Daniel Luong and Zeno Brackenridge). In these cases, Equal First Place trophies will be awarded to both Damsara and Zeno.
2. In a single tournament, players are eligible for prizes in only one age group, receiving only the highest prize they qualify for. In some tournaments, female players may win both a female prize and an open prize. However, no female player can receive two female prizes from the same tournament. Therefore, Senudi De Vas won the U18 Best Girl in Blitz with 5.5 points, and Alexandra Fleming won the U12 Best Girl in Blitz with 4.5 points.
Best Behaviour Award
This year the Best Behaviour Award was introduced, recognising players who consistently demonstrated sportsmanship and community spirit. The award acknowledges players who:
wReset the board properly after their games.
wReport results to both the section arbiter and the data entry team.
wCongratulate their opponent graciously when winning.
wAccept defeat respectfully and thank their opponent for the challenge.
wPlay their best even against friends - helping each other grow.
As our Secretary Kobe shared, this award honoured players who reported results promptly, helped with setup, and remained quiet and respectful while others were still playing - with even first-time participants conducting themselves like seasoned professionals.

SportWest Visit
On Day 2 afternoon, we were pleased to welcome Matt Bamford, Member & Partnerships Manager from SportWest, who introduced the True Sport program (https://www.truesport.com.au).
The program supports volunteers' mental health and promotes positive parent behaviour at tournaments. His visit sparked valuable discussions, and CAWA looks forward to working more closely with SportWest in the future.
