2025 WA Allegro Chess Championship

The 2025 WA Allegro Championship was held on Sunday 16th February, at North Woodvale Primary School (Perth Chess Club). There were 37 participants.

This year's event was a 9 round Swiss with a time control of 12 minutes with 3 seconds increment per move (Fischer).

We are all aware of chess's unique capacity for bringing people of all cultures and ages together. It is fitting that in the last round of the tournament, the tournament's youngest player, Zeno Brackenridge, aged 7, was paired with Australia's most senior active player, 8-time WA Champion Wolfgang Leonhardt, aged 96. Wolfgang's invaluable and continued contributions to Western Australian chess over more than 70 years are applauded by the WA chess community.

All three Championships were closely contested, with the top seed IM Patrick Gong being set back by a Round 3 loss to CM Ashvin Balavignan. However, Patrick ultimately regained the outright lead in the final round, and no playoffs were needed for any of the Championships. The presentation concluded on schedule at 5:45pm.
